Are YOU Eating “Cancer Bread”?

Glyphosate, a toxic chemicalfound in popular weedkiller Roundup, isclassed by the World Health Organization as a probable carcinogen. Roundup is commonly used across America in gardens, public parks and for agriculture – but studies have found that one of its ingredients – glyphosate – is dangerous to human health.

According to Ecowatch, glyphosate has been found to be toxic to human cells and associated with numerous diseases and health problems – from Alzheimer’s disease to birth defects and a range of cancers. Yet, despite concerns over exposure to this chemical and studies revealing that glyphosate is present in food and even water – glyphosate is often sprayed on crops just before their harvest.

What is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a herbicide that is sprayed on crops to reduce the number of undesirable weeds that grow in agricultural fields, as stated by the National Pesticide Information Center. It is non-selective, meaning it is toxic to most plants. Glyphosate is therefore mostly used in combination with Genetically Engineered crops (GE crops) that have been designed to be resistant to this powerful chemical – such as GE corn and wheat.

Roundup is manufactured by giant agribusiness Monsanto, which also produces GE seeds that are able to withstand glyphosate exposure. suggests that 88 percent of corn grown in the U.S. is GE, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and that the U.S. market is completely saturated with GE crops.

How does it affect health?

Our DNA is a complex and sensitive thing, composed of nucleic acid which is made up of adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine. As reported by, a scientific study of agricultural workers in Brazil who have been exposed to glyphosate showed that they have suffered both DNA damage and elevated levels of cell death as a result.

According to Ecowatch a study of children suffering with brain cancer revealed that if either parent had been exposed to Roundup in the two years before the child’s birth, the chances of that child developing brain cancer doubled. Meanwhile, an animal study of glyphosate exposure shows that glyphosate induces breast cancer cell growth by affecting estrogen receptors, leading to mammary tumors.

A survey of a farming community of 65,000 people in Argentina that is regularly utilizing Roundup, has revealed that cancer rates are two to four times higher than the national average, in particular with relation to breast, prostate and lung cancers.

The state of California has recently moved to classify the herbicide as a “probable carcinogen,” as reported by The Organic and Non-GMO Report.

However, in spite of all these facts, 74 percent of all glyphosate applications since the mid-1970s have happened in the last 10 years and its usage is growing.

Harvesting glyphosate-soaked crops

Glyphosate usage has doubled in the last five years according to, and more than 185 million pounds of Roundup are sprayed on U.S. crops annually. Studies have found that it takes 57 parts per million for glyphosate to completely destroy human kidney cells – however agricultural levels of this chemical are often more than 200 times this amount.

Of particular concern is the use of glyphosate just before harvesting crops such as wheat– also known as desiccating. According to The Organic and Non-GMO Report this is done to completely kill the crop one to two weeks before the harvest, which aids with the drying out of the grain. This pre-harvest spraying means that the level of glyphosate on the wheat is far higher than necessary – or desirable.

In an interview with a Saskatchewan farmer reported on in The Organic and Non-GMO Report, the farmer explains that “consumers don’t realize when they buy wheat products like flour, cookies, and bread they are getting glyphosate residues in those products … It is barbaric to put glyphosate in food a few days before you harvest it.”

All the more reason to give the store-bought “cancer bread” a miss and bake your own bread at home using organic flour – giving you piece of mind that what you’re feeding your family is free of glyphosate.

Only 10 Companies Own All The World’s Food Brands

(Original Article HERE)

Just when you think there’s no end to the diversity of junk food lining supermarket aisles, an insanely detailed infographic comes along to set us all straight. Out of the hundreds of products at our disposal, only ten major corporations manufacture the bulk of what we toss in our shopping carts.

So whether you’re looking to stock up on anything from orange soda to latte-flavored potato chips, Mondelez, Kraft, Coca-Cola, Nestlé, PepsiCo, P&G, Johnson & Johnson, Mars, Danone, General Mills, Kellogg’s, and Unilever own just about everything you could hope to buy. It seems that six degrees of separation theory has been proven after all, if only because we all drink Diet Coke every now and then.

In order to visually elucidate that point, Oxfam International created a comprehensive infographic that reveals the extensive reach of the “Big 10” food and beverage companies. Unlikely ties between brands we largely don’t associate with one another show how easy it is to be misinformed about the American food system. For example, PepsiCo produces Quaker granola bars, and Nestlé makes Kit Kat bars but also frozen California Pizza Kitchen pies. To the surprise of many, Pineapple Fanta isn’t sourced straight from the mythical Fanta Islands, but canned right alongside Barq’s root beer at the Coca-Cola factory.

Obviously, the horrors extend far beyond our own shattered daydreams. Massive corporations squash entrepreneurial diversity and make it nearly impossible for startups and small businesses to compete. According to Oxfam’s report, “The world’s largest food and beverage companies have a lot of power – but you have more. And because they’re not using theirs enough to help poor communities or the planet, you can use yours to change the way they do business.”

If you’re looking to avoid contributing to the Big 10 world takeover, try shopping at local farmers’ markets and maybe skip out on soda and highly processed foods altogether. Your body will thank you for it in the long run anyway.

The world has welcomed its first baby born through a new technique which incorporates DNA from three parents.

It was revealed by New Scientist on Tuesday that Abrahim Hassan was born in April to Jordanian parents Ibtisam Shaban and Mahmoud Hassan, but his DNA also includes some from a donor.

Shaban, the infant’s mother, carries the genes for Leigh syndrome, a fatal disorder which causes the central nervous system to fail. There are a total of 37 genes with this syndrome, found in mitochondrial DNA. Separate from the majority of DNA, mitochondria are genetic materials passed down from mothers and create energy which cells can use.

Having previously lost two children as a result of Leigh syndrome, Shaban and Hassan sought out John Zhang, a doctor at New York City’s New Hope Fertility Center to see if there was a way to remove the genes affected and replace them with ‘clean’ DNA, which is where the third parent comes in.

There are a number of theories that can be applied when using the so-called ‘three parent’ technique but only UK law allows for such measures.

The technique allowable under UK law is known as pronuclear transfer. This involves fertilizing a mother’s egg and a donor’s egg with the father’s sperm. The nucleus is then removed from both fertilized eggs before they start dividing into early-stage embryos. Importantly, the nucleus from the donor’s fertilized egg is then discarded and replaced with the nucleus from the mother’s egg.

The problem with this technique for Shaban and Hassan, however, was that as Muslims, they couldn’t morally stand over the fact that two embryos would be destroyed in the process. Instead, Zhang and his team used what’s known as a spindle nuclear transfer.

This involved doctors removing the nucleus from a donor egg and replacing it with the nucleus from one OF Shaban’s eggs, resulting in an egg with nuclear DNA from Shaban and mitochondrial DNA from a donor, thus removing Leigh syndrome from the equation. This egg was then fertilized with Hassan’s sperm.

Zhang’s team created five embryos using this technique with one embryo developing as per normal. This embryo was then implanted in Shaban. Hassan was born nine months later, as planned, with almost all DNA from both his parents but also 0.1 percent from the donor.

While Shaban and Hassan worked with doctors in the US to develop this method, neither this or the UK method are legal there so they went to Mexico where Zhang says “there are no rules.”

Researchers involved in cell research have very much welcomed the child’s unique form of conception.

Dr Dusko Ilic, a senior lecturer in Stem Cell Science at King’s College London, told New Scientist that this was “great news and a huge deal.”

“It’s revolutionary,” said Ilic, while Professor of Clinical Genomics at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, Bert Smeets, described the announcement as “exciting.”

Although the method used in this instance is new, a number of doctors in the 1990s tried creating a baby using DNA from three people but the babies went on to develop various genetic disorders, resulting in the technique being banned.

McCain Amends Water Resource Bill To Expand FBI Surveillance

(Original Article HERE)

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona introduced an amendment that would grant the FBI extensive surveillance powers during deliberations over a bill pertaining to American water supplies Monday.

The legislation is intended to help solve water problems that have arisen fromincidences like the one in Flint, Michigan, but McCain capitalized on the bill to amplify U.S. law enforcement’s spying capacity.

.@SenJohnMcCain just dumped an FBI surveillance provision into a bill about developing water resources:

McCain proposed Amendment 5037, Section 80 called “Counterintelligence Access To Telephone Toll And Transactional Records.” It’s one of 88 proposed to the Water Resources Development Act of 2016.

The modification would give the Director of the FBI the power to request information and records pertaining to personally identifiable information. Such data includes, but is not limited to, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, login history, “means and sources of payment for services (including any card or bank account information),” internet protocol addresses, routing or transmission information, and “session times and durations for an electronic communication.”

But according to the official Congressional Research Service summary, the Water Resources Development Act of 2016 is intended to revise and set forth requirements for the following:

“Reservoirs operations, flood risks, water supply, droughts, flood gate operations, harbor deepening, dredging, harbors of refuge, emerging harbors, donor ports, energy transfer ports, hurricane and storm damage reduction projects and safety restorations, a recovery plan for Gulf Coast oyster beds, ecosystem restoration projects, sediment management, and soil moisture and snowpack monitoring.”

Most importantly, the bill mandates that public water systems must inform customers of lead levels in drinking water if they exceed a set amount.

The bill also reauthorizes several other pieces of legislation and projects, including the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and Water Desalination Act of 1996 through Fiscal Year 2021.

Also: unlikely he’ll be allowed to bring it up for a few reasons. But still ridiculous/so emblematic of Washington.

Clearly, McCain and party are still very committed to expanding the power of FBI National Security Letters, and wanted to send that message.
